Scientists impact our lives as they constantly improving the quality of our lives and improve our understanding. While contributing the society some of them were able to grow their personal wealth. Today we are going to mention the 5 richest scientists that changed the world.

Technically, a scientist is a person who conducts scientific research to advance knowledge in a relevant field. In this list, most of them conducted scientific researchers, but some of them didn’t. However, it’s not wrongful to call them scientists since they all have a degree in basic sciences. For instance, they all worked in vastly different fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, medicine, and engineering. Let’s start our list of richest scientists in the world.

5. Timothy Springer

Timothy Springer is an American immunologist, biological chemistry, and molecular pharmacology professor at Harvard Medical School. Springer received BA in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation, he completed Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Harvard University as he eventually received postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge under the fellowship of Nobel Prize winner, Cesar Milstein.

He is widely recognized for his discovery of intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs), lymphocyte function-associated (LFA) molecules, and the first subfamily of integrins. You would be able to find more about his scientific research from this Harvard University page.

He founded biotech company LeukoSite in 1993. In addition to that, he also owns the shares in Selecta Biosciences, Morphic Therapeutic, and Scholar Rock. Springer is a founding investor of biotech firm Moderna, which owns 3.5% shares. During the COVID-19 pandemic, shares of Moderna surged because of its vaccine’s effectiveness of 95% approximately to the coronavirus. Eventually, Springer became a billionaire during the crisis as his net worth is estimated to be $2.7 billion.

4. Gordon Moore

Gordon Moore is an American businessman, chemist. He is the co-founder and chairman emeritus of the technology company, Intel Corporation. Moore studied physics and chemistry in university as he earned his BS degree in chemistry from the University of California. Then he obtained a doctoral degree in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1954 and completed postdoctoral research at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University until 1956.

Moore worked in Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory and Fairchild Semiconductors corporation prior to observation of Moore’s Law by him. He founded Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2000 with his wife which focuses on environmental conservation, patient care, and scientific research. As of February 2021, Moore’s net worth is estimated to be $12.4 billion according to Forbes. A substantial portion of wealth comes from his shares in Intel.

3. Jim Simons

Jim Simons is a mathematician, who is the founder of the American hedge fund, Renaissance Technologies LLC. Simons earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the age of 20 and a doctorate in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1961. Later he worked on mathematical theories, which helped him to discover Chern-Simons form. He was a lecturer at MIT and Harvard University for Mathematics and also worked with The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA).

Simons founded Renaissance Technologies in 1982 which uses computer-based mathematical, and statistical models to interpret financial data to predict future returns. Based on those predictions, they decide trades that will bring them future benefits. Besides been so wealthy, he has given more than $2.7 billion for philanthropy. According to Forbes, Simons is estimated to have a net worth of $23.5 billion.

2. Larry Page

As we approach the end of our list of scientists, their net worth figures soar dramatically. Next on our list is Larry Page who is a computer scientist and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of Google LLC and Alphabet Inc. Page holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering degree from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University. After that, Page enrolled for doctoral studies at Stanford University. But he didn’t complete his studies there.

For his Ph.D., he was advised to explore the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web (WWW) by his supervisor, Terry Winograd. The advice helped him to found the Google search engine with another Ph.D. student, Sergey Brin. The page is a founding investor for Planetary Resources, which is an American space exploration company started with the goal of mining asteroids. Flying car companies like Kitty Hawk and Opener are other ventures he invested in. Now, Larry Page is the world’s 8th richest person with a net worth of $91.6 billion.

1. Elon Musk

Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO, Elon Musk is at 2nd on our list. He is widely cited as “The Real-life Tony Stark”. Elon Musk is a scientist, industrial designer, and entrepreneur. He was born in South Africa, now he holds citizenships in South Africa, Canada, and United States. Musk graduated with BS in Physics and Economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

PayPal, The Boring Company, Neuralink, OpenAI, and SolarCity are other businesses founded by Musk. Setting up a human colony on Mars and transitioning the world into renewable energy are his main 2 ambitions. Elon worked on those ambitions in his business ventures. As of February 2021, Elon Musk is the 2nd richest person in the world with a net worth of $171.6 billion.
