Basics you need to know about types of USB- Type A, Type B, Type C

In today’s world, we can’t imagine a life without electronic devices. When we use mobile phones, laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, we always have to plug in those electronic devices with each other or with the current. USB cables are the most dominant variant of cables used to plug in those devices.

USB means Universal Serial Bus. It’s a standard maintaining by USB Implementers Forum. USB is a plug-and-play interface that allows computers and other peripheral devices to communicate with each other.

Basics about USB

First, see what it means by USB port and receptor. The slot attached to the host or computer which connects with one end of the USB cable is called “the port”. While the other electronic device connected with the host and wishing to transfer data and power is called “the receptor”. In technical terminology, USB connectors/cables are referred to as “male connectors”, and they plug with the “female ports”.

There are different versions of USB cables like USB 1.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or USB 4.0. Those versions refer to its speed and functionality that allow data to be transferred through the cable. USB type A, USB Type B, and USB type C are the types of USB that refer to the physical shape of ports and plugs. Go through the following and refer to this table.

Basic comparison in USB versions

So, let’s get back to the topic. Today we going to clarify basic things about USB types which means we are going to discuss USB Type A, USB Type B, and USB Type C.

Basics you need to know about types of USB- Type A, Type B, Type C

USB Type A

This is the most common type of USB. Most likely, you would see type A USB ports in host devices and almost every USB cable. USB type A only allows one-sided connection as it only works when cables perfectly insert with these ports. That means USB Type A is not reversible.

USB Type B

There are no USB type B ports in host devices. We could rarely see these ports in receptor devices like printers, scanners, and some older digital cameras and external hard drives. Type B ports also only allow one-sided connections. That means USB Type B is also not reversible.

USB Type C

Type C is the newest design officially announced in 2014. This is the most evolving and extensive USB type among electronic device users and in the market. So, let’s discuss more Type C.

This 24-pin double-sided connector allows for reversible plug orientation which enables you to plug your cable correctly with the port at the first time. USB Type C can carry up to 100W. That much power is enough to power up a full-size electronic device. Type C also offers bi-directional power.
