How to identify Intel Procesors using Processor Model Number

If you’ve ever looked at a product page or specs sheet for laptop, desktop, or even processor, probably you have noticed that letters attached to the end of the CPU model number. But what are those for? Those are not just random letters and numbers; each one has a specific meaning behind the model number. But unfortunately, most people don’t know the exact meaning behind that model number. In this articles, we explain how to identify the Intel processors using Processor Model Number. Processor Number includes Brand, Brand Modifier, Generation, SKU Numeric Digits, and Product Line Suffix.

1.Brand

The model number of processors begins with the brand name. Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium are economical ones. Intel Core is a more advanced processor that is faster and available additional features than the above processors. And Intel Xeon is the processor suitable for servers and workstations.

2.Brand Modifier

After the brand name, its brand modifier is next in the model number. But there is no brand modifier in Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium. Intel Core has this naming convention with i3, i5, i7, and i9. The brand modifier number gets high, it offers a higher level of performance, features, and capabilities. Generally, i3 is good enough for day to day work like browsing the internet, e-mails, word processing software. And if you are busy with photo and video editing, you should go with i5.The i7 good for high-end software developers and customers doing 4K video editing.

3.Generation Indicator

After the brand modifier, the generation of the processor comes third in the model number. Intel Core model numbers include this. In a four-digit number, the first digit indicates generation. For processors above i9 indicates generation in its first two digits.

4.SKU Numeric Digits

Stock Keeping Unit digits are next to the generation indicator. SKU number used only to identify processors and it should not use as an indicator to compare processors in different product lines and generations. But when the SKU number highs, more features included in almost the same product lines.

5.Product Line Suffix

This letter-based product line suffix is a key indicator of processor capabilities. This includes a letter. Product line suffixes are as follows,

U and Y- This has been designed for power-efficient laptops. These models couldn’t do work that needs high processing power smoothly.

T- These are power optimized desktop processors.

H- High performance optimized for mobile which has high-performance graphics.

K- K number processors have the ability to overclocking.

G-  These processors are optimized for graphics-based usages. This includes newer technology with having high-quality dedicated graphics. G number models have two digits with numbers varies from 1 to 7. A higher number indicates improved graphics performance.

XE- extreme edition maximum performance processors for desktops.
