Nikola Tesla is a Serbian-American inventor who was an electrical and mechanical engineer and a futurist whose discoveries did wonders in science. He was born on 10th July 1856 and raised in the Austrian empire. He moved to the United States in 1884 and continued his profession as an inventor.

1. Tesla Turbine

At Tesla’s time, piston engines were the standard in automobiles. Tesla developed a turbine-style engine as a competitor to the piston engines. Tesla turbine was designed using smooth discs that spun in the main chamber. It used the combustion of fuel to work. This design of the Tesla turbine gave a high fuel efficiency similar to that of modern turbines. Tesla’s engine did not commercialize as the piston engines since he was defeated by his rivalries. 2. Neon Lamps

Thanks to Tesla, we can read out the name of our favorite restaurant even at late night. Even though Tesla did not invent fluorescent or neon lights, he contributed enough for us to speak about it. Neon lights primitively were found with the discovery of cathode rays. Cathode rays are rays of electrons found in a vacuum tube and were called neon lights. Tesla tested different particles by running them through various gases. He ended up discovering four different lights. This discovery was put up in the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, from where it gained popularity.

3. The Teleautomaton

The Teleautomaton was the first radio-controlled boat discovered by Tesla. The invention opened up three significant discoveries, which were remote controllers, robots, and drones. Tesla controlled the battery-powered boat with a remote that emitted radio waves. Since the boat’s movements did not involve physically touching the boat, it was considered the earliest robot. The use of both robotics and radio waves made the Teleautomaton an ancestor of drones.

4. Tesla Coil

If you have seen a shot of electricity shooting out of thin air, you have already seen a Tesla coil. Tesla coil is a transformer that produces high voltage, low current, high-frequency alternating current. It is consists of two coils, which are primary coil and secondary coil. A capacitor is also connected to each coil to store charge. A high-voltage source powers the system. A spark gap connects two coils with capacitors together. The Tesla coil could illuminate fluorescent blubs few feet away without wires due to the alternating current produced.

5. Alternating Current 

The contribution that Tesla made to improve alternating current (AC) is above all his inventions. Even though Tesla did not invent AC, he indeed did much to make it a widespread utility. AC can transmit electricity over long distances much more efficiently. AC has powered most of the appliances in the present, keeping us in comfortable lives.
